It has become a beloved ritual at Dana-Farber: Every day, children who come to the clinic write their names on sheets of paper and tape them to the windows of the walkway for ironworkers to see. And, every day, the ironworkers paint the names onto I-beams and hoist them into place as they add floors to the new 14-story Yawkey Center for Cancer Care.

3 years agoPeople who are just getting go know you may not realize what an incredibly complex person you are. All your qualities make you who you are, so when someone limits you by labeling you “perky” or “artsy” or “crazy” or whatever, they are showing their own shortsightedness. Bad example: Let’s say somebody falls in love with you while you’re playing the trumpet. Then you put down the trumpet to go have dinner and the person gets really disappointed. You can’t constantly play the trumpet just to keep that person interested. Just like you can’t constantly be manic because some jag-off who wants to encapsulate you thinks it’s attractive. It’s unrealistic on their part. In you, there is a whole world of feelings and emotions, an array of personality traits and hidden talents that you unveil gradually as trust builds. A person would be lucky as hell to be allowed access to multifaceted you.
Today remind yourself: I am so much more!
